English media ‘excludes Heung-min Son’
Son Heung-min has been left out of a poll of Tottenham Hotspur’s all-time best players by British media outlets. Harry Kane is the only player from the post-2000 era to make the cut.
The Daily Mail published a poll on Monday titled “Tottenham’s greatest player of all time. Two former England managers have played for Tottenham. Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves, and Paul Gascoigne are club legends. Who do you think is the greatest Tottenham player of all time?” and asked the public to vote for the most outstanding player in the club’s history.
“Tottenham hasn’t been crowned English champions since 1961 but has always prided itself on the passion of its players,” the outlet said of the nominees. However, Son Heung-min’s name was not on the list. Harry Kane is the only player on the list who played after 2000. The likes of Ledley King and Gareth Bale were also left out.
In total, there were 14 candidates for Tottenham”s best player of all time. Alf Ramsey, Ted Ditchburn, Danny Blenchflower, Dave Mackay, Jimmy Greaves, Martin Chivers, Steve Perriman, Glenn Hoddle, Osi Adiles, Ricky Villa, Carey Mavert, Paul Gascoigne, Jürgen Klinsmann, and Kane.
Ramsey influenced English soccer by introducing the “push and run” style of play during Tottenham’s 1951 league championship. Ditchburn was the league’s best goalkeeper that season. Blenchflower captained the team in 1961, Tottenham’s last league title year, and McKay was a first-team FA Cup winner.
Greaves was the club’s all-time leading scorer before the arrival of Kane, while Chivers scored 174 goals and won a UEFA Cup with Tottenham. Perryman holds the club record for league appearances with 655, while Hoddle won back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982. Adiles and Villa also led Tottenham alongside Hoddle.
Mabhart is second on the club’s all-time appearances list behind Perryman and won the FA Cup in 1991. Gascoigne joined Spurs in 1988 for the highest transfer fee in English history. Klinsmann was the hero who saved Spurs from relegation in 1998. Finally, Kane broke Greaves’ record for most goals and is second on the Premier League’s all-time goalscoring list before moving to Bayern Munich last year.
There was no Son Heung-min in the nine years since 2015. In the nine years since joining Tottenham in 2015, Son Heung-min has become an integral part of the club’s 토토사이트 순위 legacy. He is fifth on the club’s all-time goalscoring list (162) and is on track to become the 14th player in Tottenham history to reach 400 appearances (408).
In the 2021-2022 season, he became the first Asian player to win the Premier League’s top scorer title, tying Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) with 23 league goals.
Last season, he was named captain by manager Anze Postecoglou, becoming the club’s first non-European to wear the captain’s armband. Son, who had already captained the South Korean national soccer team since 2018, took the reins at Tottenham and brought the Spurs squad together with his friendly leadership.
Heung-min scored 17 goals in the league after a poor campaign the previous season, and his 10th assist against Sheffield United gave him three single-season 10-10 records. He joined Chelsea legend Didier Drogba on the list. Only Eric Cantona (Leeds/Manchester United) and Frank Lampard (Chelsea) have done it four times in their careers, while Wayne Rooney (Man United) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) have done it five times.
Despite these performances, Son hasn’t been able to keep himself out of the discussion of Tottenham’s all-time best players. Greaves currently leads the poll with 1,340 votes, followed by Hoddle in second place (736), Kane in third (497), Gascoigne in fourth (305) and Blanchflower in fifth (253).
