Halep in her return match
Simona Halep (Romania) suffered an upset loss in her return to the court after a year and a half.
Halep lost 1-2 to Paula Badosa (80th place, Spain) in the first round of singles on the first day of the Women’s Professional Tennis (WTA) Tour Miami Open (total prize money: $8,770,480) held in Miami, Florida, USA on the 20th (Korean time). We lost (6-1 4-6 3-6).
Halep, who ranked No. 1 in the world in 2017, won the French Open in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019.
However, at the US Open in September 2022, he was found to be suspected of taking banned substances, and was unable to appear in official competitions for a year and a half.
He was suspended for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Organization in September last year, but appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and the suspension was reduced to nine months earlier this month.
Halep, whose disciplinary period ended in July of last year, made her comeback through the Miami Open.
Halep could not participate in this tournament on her own because she currently has no world ranking due to a gap of more than a year, but the tournament organizers granted her a wild card.
Paula Badosa
Badosa, who defeated Halep that day, is also well-known as the lover of Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece), ranked 11th in the world in singles on the ATP Tour.
Badosa also rose to second place in the world in 2022, but recently performed poorly due to injuries and other reasons, and her world ranking fell to 80th place.
Badosa, who defeated Halep, will face Arina Sabalenka (2nd place, Belarus) in the second round, round of 64.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka’s boyfriend, Konstantin Koltsov, a former member of the Belarusian national ice hockey team, was found dead at his Miami lodgings the day before.
According to ESPN, an American sports media outlet, local police investigated Colthorpe’s cause of death and announced that there was no suspicion of homicide. 한국야동
