‘We need to qualify for Champions League to get him’
Arsenal and Manchester United (Man United) are set to battle it out to strengthen their ranks.
“The Red Devils are ready to battle it out with Arsenal for the signing of Miguel Gutierrez (22, Girona) this summer,” Spanish outlet Fichajes reported on Thursday.
United’s record this season has been nothing short of disappointing. After 27 games in the Premier League, they have 14 wins, two draws, and 11 losses, leaving them in sixth place with 44 points.
Recent form hasn’t been good either. Following last month’s loss to Fulham, United have now lost back-to-back league games, including a 1-3 defeat to Manchester City in the 27th round of the league.
Defensive insecurity on the left flank has been United’s biggest problem. With Luke Shaw out injured, center-back Victor Lindelof started at left-back against Fulham and City, but he was far from satisfactory.
The search for a new left-back has become a priority for United. With Shaw having been plagued by nagging injuries in recent years, the argument is that United need to sign a left-back to replace him.
Gutierrez is one of the most likely candidates. According to the report, United have labeled Gutierrez as a key target and are determined to secure his signature this summer.
Gutierrez is a well-regarded prospect who came through the Real youth ranks. The left-back is a left-footed left-back whose main strengths are his accurate left-footed kick and his sharp movement through the center.
He has been a standout performer this season. With one goal and six assists in 30 games across all competitions, he is considered one of the main reasons for the team’s rise to the top of the table.
There will be stiff competition for his signature. Arsenal, as well as Manchester United, have also targeted Gutierrez to compete with Oleksandr Zinchenko for the starting role.
“Qualifying for the UEFA Champions League will be a key factor in Gutierrez’s decision,” says Fichajes, “as the club will be looking to secure a place in the competition. Arsenal, who have a better chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season, have the advantage.”
